How To Reduce Swelling After Breast Augmentation And Minimize Scarring

Swelling After Breast AugmentationSwelling after breast augmentation surgery is a normal way our bodies respond to irritation and trauma. There will be swelling on the chest which will transfer to the abdomen and groin area before it disappears. How much of size is swelling after breast augmentation? There is always some swelling after breast augmentation, usually less than five to ten percent.The skin will also appear a little shiny. Pain and discomfort are two of the words used to describe the swelling after breast augmentation. Breast augmentation post op care is therefore very important.

 

Does Swelling Always Go Down After Breast Augmentation?

Most of the swelling should subside after 7 to 10 days. All in all, the swelling after breast augmentation will take about four months after surgery to fully subside. Applying ice packs is best to bring down the breast augmentation swelling. Besides ice cubes, you can also use frozen peas, fruits or vegetables which are packed in rectangular packs. Sleeping in a slightly elevated position helps to relieve the pressure and pain in the chest area.

There will be some water retention, but resist the temptation to take herbal or synthetic diuretics such as coffee or tea after the surgery. Instead, drink lots of water to flush out toxins. Reduce your salt intake to minimize water retention.

Before the removal of stitches, be sure to keep the incision area dry. Do not apply any creams, lotions, or topical ointments into the incision, as they may cause inflammation. Avoid bathing until the incisions are closed and your sutures have been removed. Get help to wash your hair as you will be advised not to raise your arms over your head.

Your breasts will gradually soften. The nipples may be numb or occasionally hypersensitive for a week or two after the operation. Occasionally, tenderness and sensitivity of the nipples may be severe enough to require the placement of a plaster or dressing over the nipples for a week or two. Numb nipples usually recover sensation after a few weeks or even months.

You should wear a well-fitting sports bra or breast augmentation bra for at least 2 weeks. The bra reduces movement and pain. Avoid rigorous exercise, lifting and sexual activity for four weeks. Stitches will be removed 7 to 10 days after surgery and you will receive advice on how to manage your scars. Some ways to lighten your scars quickly include moisturizing and / or the use of a specific scar removal cream or gel.

To further bring down the swelling and to lighten your scars even more quickly, seek advice from your doctor about massaging your breasts after the removal of sutures. Go for regular gentle massages on your chest region to improve blood circulation and reduce fluid retention. Use a good massage oil such as evening primrose or rosehip oil. This promotes healing and scar removal.
